H. Hoie

On View:

March 8 - December 21, 2024

Location:

The Nathaniel Rogers House, 2539 Mtk Hwy, Bridgehampton

In creating my own world of collage from pieces of paper, fabric, or almost any material at hand, I enjoy the translucency of color, the gentle movement of flowing threads, the depths of space that are created as one surface overlaps another. It defines a new, personal universe.

Having created a collage, it is a natural transition to translate and develop that atmosphere into a large-scale painting. While I do not feel obliged to follow the collage-sketch precisely in the larger painting, it serves as a point of departure for color and composition. The painting assumes a life of its own, and may stray far from the original collage. At other times it turns into a "trompe l' oeil"; the shapes are abstract but the painting seems like an actual collage, so I call myself an "abstract-realist" Flaubert has said: "It seems to me that the apogee of art (and the most difficult to achieve) is not to evoke laughter or tears, nor to arouse passion or rage, but rather to do as nature does, that is to say, "to evoke dreams."

-Helen Hoie

H.HOIE: Paintings and Collages, is an examination of Helen Hoie’s exploration of the mediums of painting and collage. For Helen, the latter fed into the former. Her collages were studies for the larger paintings on canvas. The works included in this exhibition are from the Estate of Claus and Helen Hoie and are part of the Bridgehampton Museum’s permanent collection.

We invite you to explore and experience Helen’s works and be pulled into her world of color, form and shape.
